Paisley clutched Crockettâs arm. All hell had broken loose. People ran this way and that, yelling fit to wake the dead. A second later, a group of cowboys galloped toward headquarters to get their orders.
Fear raced through her, chilling her bones as they hurried toward her house. âThis is madness. But Farrel thrives on that.â
âAgreed, but we donât know this is him.â Crockett helped her over a hole in the ground.
âI do know,â she insisted.
Hilda and Tye came out onto the porch, the boy clinging to her dress. Paisley raced to them. âAre you all right?â
âShaken up is all.â Hilda put a hand to her forehead. âDo you think Farrel did this?â
âI hate myself for thinking this, but yes. My brother is very capable of sowing chaos and fear.â
Crockett gave her a hurried hug. âI need to see whatâs happened. Weâll talk later.â Houston careened toward them in a wagon, and it seemed unusual not to see him on a horse. Crockett jumped in with his father as the wagon slowed a bit and they sped off.
Paisleyâs heart plummeted to the pit of her stomach as she watched them hurtle toward danger. She wanted to call them back and keep them safe, but she knew nothing she said would make any difference. She clutched her hands to her heart. The Legends thought they could win. They thought Farrel was a little nastier than most yet mortal all the same.
They didnât know he was the devil incarnate.
The porch shook beneath their feet as she caught a flash far in the distance. The explosion reverberated through the ground. God help them! Was he going to keep this up until he blew up the entire county?
âCome, letâs get inside.â She put an arm across Tyeâs shoulders and opened the door.
Tye looked up at her. âDo you think Casanova is okay?â
âYes, honey. I think heâs fine. Why, Iâll bet heâs sleeping and hasnât felt a thing.â
Her face pinched, Hilda came in behind them and shut the door, pasting on a smile. âI went to the mercantile today and bought some popcorn. Would anyone want some?â
âYea! I do, Mama!â Tye jumped up and down. âPopcornâs good.â
âI agree.â Paisley considered the kitchen area the safest place to be at the moment. âAnd what if your mama and I read from that book you like?â
âOh boy! I like Arabian Nights. Aladdin uses magic in it.â
Remembering the fantasy werewolf Tye pulled from the air when he was so distraught, Paisley lovingly touched his head. âI often thought Iâd like to ride a magic carpet and go anywhere in the world I wanted. Wouldnât that be fun?â
âAnd you could get away from bad people real easy.â
Although Farrelâs name didnât come up a lot around Tye, the boy glanced up with worry lining his face. He was very smart, and it wasnât any stretch to imagine he was probably thinking about his father and that he was responsible for the explosions. Tye knew what Farrel was capable of.
âFurthermore,â Paisley continued
